Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is the National Impact of Rebuilding Together?
Operating in more than 770 cities and towns in all 50 states, Rebuilding Together will rehabilitate more than 8,050 homes and nonprofit facilities in 2009. A volunteer work force of over 257,250 volunteers will donate 2.5 million hours in service to their communities.
2. Why Are Rebuilding Together Services Needed?
The current 22 million low-income homeowner families are expected to grow to an astonishing 28.5 million by the year 2010. More and more families are placed in the position of choosing between vital necessities, such as food or medicine, and a roof that does not leak. Disabled homeowners cannot afford the modifications that allow them to "age in place" and remain in their homes. Rebuilding Together works to ensure that as many of those families as possible do not have to make these difficult choices.
3. Is Rebuilding Together Affiliated With a Particular Church or Religion?
Rebuilding Together is NOT affiliated with any particular church or religion. The program embraces all people: all faiths, walks-of-life, racial and ethnic groups, ages, and sexes. The spirit of the program is that of giving and sharing, as embodied in the former title "Christmas in April."
4. Who Sponsors Rebuilding Together?
Funds come from corporations, individuals, labor organizations, foundations, civic organizations, churches, and synagogues interested in helping build a better world. Local programs are responsible for their own fund-raising, publicity, volunteer recruitment, and management. Rebuilding Together is a non-profit, non-sectarian organization supported entirely by voluntary contributions of time and money.
5. How Widespread is the Rebuilding Together Program?
There are presently more than 260 local programs throughout the United States known as Rebuilding Together, that is a new name replacing our previous logo as Christmas in April. Our name change occurred in January 2001. To date, over 63,000 homes have been repaired by Rebuilding Together.
6. Do the Homeowners Pay?
All repairs are free for the homeowners. Labor and supplies are donated by the Rebuilding Together affiliate. Homeowners and family members are asked to welcome the volunteers into their homes and work alongside them in the spirit of neighbor-helping-neighbor. Our work is done with families and neighborhoods. Rebuilding Together provides a homeowner brochure to clarify these and other practices.
