The amontillado was a significant symbol because it is what is used to lure fortunate and represents a rare, "fortunate would clearly imply that is man of good fortunate, when the actual cause is that he is about to scuffs a mostly untimely demise" which is ironic because fortunato is not very fortunito. There are several different opinions on what the stories actual meaning is from other authors and the general public. It's a tale of revenge, murder, torture, and addiction set in a vast underground Italian catacomb (underground cemetery). Although carnival season is in full-swing above ground, Fortunato finds himself being lead to his death below ground. Montresor takes advantage of drunk Fortunato with a promise of a taste of Amontillado (a wine). The Amontillado represents two causes of Fortunato's demise: (1) Fortunato is extremely drunk, more than likely drunk on wine. By telling him that there is a cask of amontillado that he must confirm its authenticity; but all the while as they are descending to the deepest depths of the catacombs, he uses reverse psychology and states they must return upstairs as the mold and mildew are making Fortunato cough violently. In painting and gemmary, Fortunato, like his countrymen, was a quack-but in the matter of old wines he was sincere.
This punishment will be the death of his "friend", but that isn't enough. What differs from this act of confession is the lack of repentance expressed in the tone of the protagonist Montresor. The first and most prominent ambiguity in "The Cask of Amontillado" is in the "thousand injuries" that Montesor has supposedly borne from Fortunato.
